Radial Riveting

By riveting, we mean the upsetting of a rivet to form a head to hold several assembled parts together. The rivet can be in the form of a pin or an eyelet

This riveting process allows fixed or hinged assemblies to be made.

It also allows special shapes to be riveted without difficulty (square section tubes as ladder rungs).

Due to the riveting principle and the specific position of the tool (rivet set) on the part to be upset, the upsetting load required is 6 times lower than for direct thrust (press). In certain complex cases (axial access with rivet set impossible), a roller-head swaging procedure can be used.

Orbital or gyroscopic riveting

Rivet set angle is from 1 to 8o depending on results to be obtained. It turns around a vertical axis at 1,500 or 3,000 rev/min and describes a cone whose apex corresponds to the centre of gravity of the rivet head to be formed. It is the tool which gives the shape.

Daisy or radial riveting

The principle is similar to gyroscopic riveting. The only difference : rotation is transformed into a daisy-shape movement. The rivet set describes a petal for each revolution of the spindle. The material is pushed outwards then inwards passing via the centre.

For a given job with the 10-petal system, the spindle must make 10 turns at 130 rev/min to obtain one complete revolution of the rivet set on the rivet.

This increases the riveting time when compared with orbital riveting at 1,500 rev/min but improves quality of appearance and surface treatment and makes riveting of tricky parts easier.
